Service Disruption Post Mortem – August 31st

Service Disruption Post Mortem – August 31st On Friday 31st August, 2018, the Bitfinex platform encountered an issue which forced us to suspend trading for a total of roughly 60 minutes. At 14.55 UTC the platform started encountering issues originating from our cloud hosting provider restarting a core matching server. Our team begun assessing the damage immediately. Here we ensured that no data was lost and we flushed the pending queues to the database. Once the integrity of the system was established, the restart and resync procedure was performed, as well as a series of automated and manual tests to ensure all functionalities were in order. A list of all executed trades during downtime can be found here . Please note in the above file that Type: Synchronising ME refers to trades executed as we recovered data that was not fully synced and saved onto our databases. All users were kept informed via twitter.com/bitfinex , as well as bitfinex.statuspage.io . We are taking concrete s

Are bitcoins (or fractions of bitcoins) labeled with IDs?

Are bitcoins (or fractions of bitcoins) labeled with IDs? Many sources describe the double spending problem by saying something like "people cannot be able to spend the same bitcoin twice." [1] [2] [3] So are bitcoins, or the smallest allowable bitcoin fractions, distinctly labeled entities? My understanding was that they are not, and that the blockchain only records information on the amount of bitcoins each user has. Also, if I am correct, what would double spending actually look like in the bitcoin system? If I send a transaction to one miner saying "I pay user X 1 bitcoin" and another transaction to a different miner saying "I pay user Y 1 bitcoin", then it seems like I haven't double-spent, but rather just paid two bitcoins in total, one to each user. Right? https://ift.tt/2wp7zY4

General private/public key generation

General private/public key generation Not sure if this is the correct forum to ask, but I couldn't find a general one for all cryptocurrencies I wanted to get an idea on how the whole cold-storage private/public key generation works for different cryptocurrencies. So I was playing around with BIP32 deriviation path on: https://iancoleman.io/bip39/#english I noticed that for example BTC, XRP, PIRL all have the same BIP32 root key and BIP32 extended private/public key, but DOGE was completely different. Why is that? BTC hashing algorithm is SHA256 and PIRL uses Scrypt, their root seeds are the same, while DOGE which uses Dagger has a different seed and private/public key. The second part that I don't understand is the generation process of addresses for different cryptocurrencies, is there a web site where I could look up on how it's done? The only one I found is for bitcoin here https://www.mobilefish.com/services/cryptocurrency/cryptocurrency.html#refMethod2 https://ift.

How to flush bitcoind cache?

How to flush bitcoind cache? I have been working with a bitcoin full node trying to implement a personal blockchain explorer using RPC API calls to populate an external database. After trying to gather some statistics on RPC call speeds I noticed that there seems to be some form of caching. Not sure if this is cached on the daemon side or with the levelDB. But when I launch a mobile wallet set up to connect specifically to my node, I don't see a new incoming connection from the server's point of view. I retrieved a small amount on the legacy address and it shows up in Mycelium and on block explorers. But as a watch only address, I cannot touch it in Mycelium, but it does not show up in my Ledger applications, as those are only showing the Segwit addresses. So, is there any way of ever touching that funds again? I found a lot of comments on sending funds from a non-segwit to segwit address, but nothing on this interesting problem. I have to add some info: - when I derive the account extended public key from other wallets but the Ledger-wallets I get an ypub6-address, which is also showing up when I write my mnemonic key in iancoleman.io (mnemonic code converter) - technically I should not have been able to import

Bitcoin Core 0.16.2 Released

Bitcoin Core 0.16.2 Released Bitcoin Core version 0.16.2 is now available from: https://bitcoincore.org/bin/bitcoin-core-0.16.2/ This is a new minor version release, with various bugfixes as well as updated translations. Please report bugs using the issue tracker at GitHub: https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/issues To receive security and update notifications, please subscribe to: https://bitcoincore.org/en/list/announcements/join/ How to Upgrade If you are running an older version, shut it down. Wait until it has completely shut down (which might take a few minutes for older versions), then run the installer (on Windows) or just copy over /Applications/Bitcoin-Qt (on Mac) or bitcoind/bitcoin-qt (on Linux). The first time you run version 0.15.0 or newer, your chainstate database will be converted to a new format, which will take anywhere from a few minutes to half an hour, depending on the speed of your machine. Note that the block database format also changed in version 0.8.0

How to get output linked to input in SPV node?

How to get output linked to input in SPV node? We're working on bitcoin SPV wallet. After setting bloom filter, we only get merkle blocks, and transactions that match the hashes we set plus some false positives. If a transaction is where we SEND coins, we can calculate a fee of that transaction, because we also HAVE previous transaction holding an output we spent. But, if a transaction is where we RECEIVE coins, then we can't calculate the fee. Because, we DON'T HAVE previous transaction holding someone's output which he spent. As far as I know, there's no way to request single transaction from peers. How can we get previous transaction or at least it's output's value? https://ift.tt/2BZ04fO

How to handle multiple inflight transactions from same address?

How to handle multiple inflight transactions from same address? How are multiple inflight transactions from the same address handled? From my understanding, there are two options depending on how change is handled, but both seem to have substantial drawbacks: If change for each transaction generates a new address for the change - the usual handling - then you can't handle two transactions since they will both want to use the same unspent output address. And they will both use it entirely by definition. The ergonomics of this seems poor - I can only ever do one transaction from an address at a time. In that case I would want bitcoins sent to me to always be shredded (no bills larger than $20 please). If I have change sent sent back to the original address, does it matter in what order they are added to the chain? I can't see why. This however allows everybody to track my wallet and where I'm transacting. Also I don't know if all wallets support this. Is my under

How does "headers first" affect BLKxxxx.dat structure?

How does "headers first" affect BLKxxxx.dat structure? Assuming a full node running Bitcoincore v0.10 (with txindex=1), how exactly does the new "headers first" functionality affect the structure of the blockchain data? (Specifically, the blkxxxx.dat data, though perhaps I'm unaware of other files which are ancillary to the data structure). The README.md for the release specifies that there's no v0.9.x back-compatibility for v0.10 blockchain blk data. Because release 0.10.0 makes use of headers-first synchronization and parallel block download (see further), the block files and databases are not backwards-compatible with older versions of Bitcoin Core or other software: Blocks will be stored on disk out of order (in the order they are received, really), which makes it incompatible with some tools or other programs. Reindexing using earlier versions will also not work anymore as a result of this. How then, does the 0.10 version blk data get par

New NebuTech BTMiner 9.0 for Bytom (BTM) With Improved Hashrate One more update for the NebuTech BTMiner Nvidia GPU miner to version 9.0 for mining Bytom (BTM) that brings significant performance improvement by increasing the hashrate provided by the miner with about 30% over the previous version 8.0 released earlier this month. This is a very significant performance improvement and it comes along with additional stability improvements to the miner, so if you are mining Bytom (BTM) with your NVidia GPU mining rigs you must definitely update ot the latest version. We remind you that the NebuTech BTMiner is a closed source Bytom (BTM) GPU miner for Nvidia CUDA that is available for both Windows and Linux operating systems and it has a 3% developer fee built-in. – To download the latest NebuTech BTMiner Bytom Nvidia GPU Miner v9.0 for Windows/Linux… https://ift.tt/2opehZX

Is it possible to hide the sender or receiver of transactions by "zk-SNARK" or "Bulletproofs"?

Is it possible to hide the sender or receiver of transactions by "zk-SNARK" or "Bulletproofs"? To support the user privacy , is it possible to hide the sender address or receiver address of transactions by "zk-SNARK" or "Bulletproofs" ? Or we’ll be able only to hide the value that is mapped to an address ? Assume the following mapping: mapping (address => bytes32) userData; Normally, using non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs (like "zk-SNARK" or "Bulletproofs"), we are able to hide the value that is mapped to an address (i.e. userData) as follows: mapping (address => bytes32) userDataHash; And then by zero-knowledge proofs, we can prove that if userDataHash meets a condition? For example, prove that an encrypted number is in a given range, without revealing anything else about the number. However, assume that instead of Data, we want to hide sender of transaction (i.e. address). We want to

Is there a decentralized zk-SNARK (zero-knowledge Succinct Non-Interactive ARgument of Knowledge)?

Is there a decentralized zk-SNARK (zero-knowledge Succinct Non-Interactive ARgument of Knowledge)? Normally, in zk-SNARK, we need to generate two public keys: one for prover and one for verifier. And because of this, the process of those public generation is done by a trusted third party . Statement: for an attacker to change history, they must solve computational puzzles at a faster rate than the rest of the participants combined I'm new to cryptocurrency and blockchain. I just started reading the textbook Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency Technologies by Narayananm, Bonneau, Felten, Miller and Goldfeder. The statement in the title is given in the introduction to the book (page 17 in the pre-publication draft for anyone interested) I'm assuming it is accurate and that it is connected to the architecture of the bitcoin blockchain. However, I don't quite understand why this is the case. Is it because in order to change history you need to change the entire chain up to the block you want to change? And why do you need do be faster than all others combined? Any explanation would be greatly appreciated! Edit: Later, on page 33: as long as we store the hash pointer at the head of the list in a place where the adversary cannot change it, the adversary will be unabl

Merit, a New Under the Radar Digital Currency To Check Out

Merit, a New Under the Radar Digital Currency To Check Out Once in a while we stumble on some really interesting under the radar projects that are interesting as an idea and show great potential for growth, often by coincidence or getting advice to check them out by friends or readers. Here comes another one of these called Merit that has been launched a few months ago and has been growing steadily and mostly under the radar, because it is an invite only network where you actually “mine” the invites as well as the Merit (MRT) coins. Merit uses a controlled-growth model, so that there will not be a quick hype, but instead slower, but safer growth of the whole ecosystem with changes and improvements along the way making things better and easier. One of the good things about the project is that you actually can mine coins, we like mining crypto coins and we are sure you do so as well, but there are also other ways to earn coins like the Growth Rewards that are a kind of a lottery syste
