Any studies on minimum USD value needed on BTC to make mining worth the cost? My understanding of the Bitcoin ecosystem is that the task referred to as "mining" is actually the processing (confirming) of the Bitcoin transactions, and that the miner "finds" a coin when they find the accepted hash of a block of transactions. Based on the information in other questions here, the mathematical difficulty of processing the transactions is expected to increase as more Bitcoins enter the ecosystem while at the same time the block reward is expected to halve at every 210,000 blocks. The mathematical difficulty present in the mining process has of course a bearing on the cost of electricity and processing time of the hardware. How are transactions verified by nodes other than the initial receiver? If I understand correctly, when I create a new transaction from my wallet, I have to sign it and encrypt it. My wallet encrypts the message using the public key of the node it is connected to, so it can decrypt the message when it receives it, and signs the message with my private key, so the node knows it was me who sent the message because my public key is then sent along with the message. What I don't understand is that when this message is transmitted to the other nodes for verification, how can they decrypt it if it was encrypted using the initial node public key. What's the advantage of making a new node sync from the genesis block? Bitcoin's blockchain is very much like a version control. It versions the unspent output database (and some metadata I don't know about) and blocks represent the deltas (commits or patches) to this database. Now if you want to know the state of the system after 1000 blocks, you need to start from the genesis block, then download, verify and apply 1000 blocks (patches) to it. Now we are beyond 500000 blocks and syncing up new node takes ages. Version controls solve this problem by inserting a full snapshot instead of deltas after several revisions so one don't have to apply all patches from first to last to get to the latest state. Now I want to make a realease on production server located elsewhere to which I have ssh access. I dont want to put my wallet.dat in git. Of course. Why am I getting drastically different results from running estimatesmartfee on different nodes? I have deployed own bitcoin-core node recently. Now when I try running "estimatesmartfee 2" from the console I get "feerate": 0.00031175. Bitcoin Speed: 7 Transactions Per Second? I read somewhere that Bitcoin can only handle 7 transactions per second. This works out to 604,800 transactions per day. Visa currently processes about 1,700 transactions per second (and can handle vastly higher amounts than this). This means that the Bitcoin system can handle less than 1/200 of Visa's current processing output. Is this correct? I find it hard to believe that so many people would buy into a system that's so inefficient / unscalable. Also, if my assumption is correct, suppose there are (on avg) 700 transactions per second during a given 10 min period (i.e, 70 times the max output rate) does this mean we will need to wait 70 * 10 min for all those transactions to be confirmed? Transactions are stored in the form of merkel trees inside a block. (I know how a merkel tree is made). A merkel root is calculated and stored in the block header. An SPV can ask a full node about the balance of an address (which is an encryption of public key). Now a full node is supposed to give merkel root hash of all the blocks which contain the transactions( which contains the UTXOs which can be spent by the private key holder by unlocking its output script using its digital signature). Exchange trying to scam me out of 0.0228 BTC! A very long story short is that on 12/3/17 I was making my Second BTC deposit on Whaleclub.com and the wallet address for my account with them had suddenly changed right prior to me sending the fund. How does total cost of mining affect the price of coins? The goal of this question is to explore what the correlation is between the cost of the total energy consumption behind a PoW based cryptocurrency and its price. Obviously, the cost of mining cannot be lower (in the long run) than the price of the coin, because more and more miners wold join. But is the converse (empirically) also true? Have the price of coins been historically bounded from below by the cost of mining? Of course, the cost of mining is hard to compute, because of differences in hardware, electricity price and cryptojacking. Yet, one can find some nice charts here about Bitcoin, so some estimates can be made. Has anyone looked at this? For example, the market cap of Bitcoin is about twice the market cap of Ethereum.
